Clarity Challenge 38 Mid-month - Masking Technique

Hi again - hope you're enjoying the springtime, isn't this just the best time of year?
It's given me an idea for my second inspirational piece.....Hands up those that have started sorting out their wardrobes to see what summer gear they've got?
Well this is not exactly about what we've got, but who wouldn't like a nice snazzy pair of shoes...and more's to the point...who doesn't just "LOVE SHOES".......???
Ingredients:
Piece of watercolour card 6"x6" & a second piece 7"x7"
An 8"x8" blank greeting card
"Clarity Style" Stencil & Unmounted Stamps & a couple of shoe masks made from post-it notes
Woodpress Letters Alphabet & masks
Unmounted Daisies stamp set & masks made from post-it notes
Black Archival Ink
Selection of dye based inks - I used Adirondack Mountain Rose, Tin Holtz Festive Berries, Peacock Feathers, Scattered Straw & Weathered Wood, make-up sponges and blending tools
Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens
Watercolour pencils
Charcoal pencil
Glossy Accents & ribbon to finish off
Start by placing the shoe innie onto a post-it pad and draw round it and cut two shoes (don't forget that the stamp will face the opposite direction and don't do what I did  and cut them back-to-front!).
Decide where you want your pair of shoes and remember the first one you stamp will be the one in the front of the artwork.  Use Black Archival ink as this gives you a permanent image that won't bleed when you add the dye-based inks later.
Mask the first shoe and stamp the second one slightly offset so that it appears behind.  (Post-its are better for masking when stamping as the acetate is a bit thick for this purpose)
Next, place the stencil over the front shoe, tape it down, (and cover the dress so that there's no chance of getting ink through that part), and sponge Festive Berries through the aperture.
Once dry, place a shoe mask over the inked area and move the stencil up and repeat the process on the second shoe

Next, mmmmm, what to say....Well as I said, who doesn't "Like Shoes"....
Stamp the Woodpress letter boxes onto tracing paper (thank you for the tip Barbara) and decide where you want to place them on your artwork, then go ahead and stamp the first set of boxes and mask them before continuing.  Apologies for the sideways photo, but I couldn't rotate it - hope you don't get a crick in your neck looking at it!
Leave the letter box masks in place and replace the shoe masks, then stamp & mask the daisies around the edge.  Once these are all done and masked off, using the blending tools and your ink selection, lightly colour the card using the blending tools.
Remove the daisy masks as you want the flowers to appear behind the letterboxes & shoes, then add some shadow using a grey-tone ink with a make-up sponge to add depth to your artwork round the letter boxes & shoes.
Colour in the daisies using the Spectrum Noir Sparkle pen, I used "Macaroon" from the Vintage Hues set as that matched the shoes perfectly.
Stamp the letters into the boxes and once dry, colour in the boxes with a yellow watercolour pencil
I also like to add depth to the shadowing using charcoal - looks fab on watercolour card as it picks up the texture really well.
And just because I like a bit of glitz & sparkle, I went over the daisies and the shoes with a clear Sparkle pen - you get one in each Spectrum Noir set, I love 'em.
Add a few black speckles with a black Micron pen to the middle of the daisies and finish off using Glossy Accents in the centre.
Using the same colours that you blended for the shoe background, blend them on the larger piece of card, and using a circular motion with the blending tool, edge both pieces with Festive Berries.
I flicked some water at the artwork and blotted it to add a bit more interest.
Mount the small piece onto the second and before mounting the larger piece on the greeting card, put ribbon round and secure on the back with a small piece of cellotape.
Tie a bow and stick on in the middle and that's it finished!

Well I think I'd better start sorting out my summer clothes as I'm off to New York at the end of this month...one thing's for sure, I definitely won't be taking any high-heeled shoes with me!!!!

There's already some lovely entries to the Challenge, but if you haven't entered yet, you've got until 30th April, so come and join in the fun!
Look forward to seeing you back here again soon xxx

Clarity Challenge 38 - Masking Technique

Hi everyone - nice to see you again & thank you for paying me a visit :-)
A lovely bright day here in West London - lots of sunshine forecast for the day, (and the weekend - whoopee!), just the thought of sunshine makes it a happier day for me!

A new month and a new type of Challenge for you this time using the "masking technique."

The rose I've used for my artwork this month, although it's one of Clarity's older stamps, I only recently added it to my Clarity collection, so I thought I'd give it an airing for our masking challenge.

I love to colour, and this is a substantial size for a focal point on a card and great to colour in!  I particularly like this sentiment too....must be the sunshine element of it that drew me to use it with the beautiful roses!

So the ingredients for my card are as follows:
Heart Rose Stamp & 2 masks cut from post-its
Leafy Swirl Stamp
May Flowers Verse
Landscape Masks
Stencil brushes & blending tool
Black & Olive Archival Inks
Mountain Rose Adirondack Ink
Tumbled Glass & Squeezed Lemonade Distress Inks
Clear Embossing Powder (& talcum powder)
Watercolour card, contrasting backing card & an 8x8 blank greeting card
Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens & a grey Promarker
Masking tape, ruler & a black Micron pen
(links for elements available from Claritystamp are shown below)

Start by cutting a piece of watercolour paper to 7"x7" and dust with talc before starting to prevent any wayward embossing granules sticking where you don't want them!  Stamp the first rose in place using black archival ink - Sprinkle with embossing powder & heat-set .  Next, stamp the verse and emboss.  Mask the first rose image, then stamp the next flower in place, remove the mask before sprinkling the powder, and heat-set.

Mask off both roses and stamp the Leafy Swirl to add foliage using the Olive Archival ink.  I found it easier to stamp one swirl at a time, remove the masks then sprinkle on the embossing powder and heat-set individually.  Continue to add a few more swirls in the same way, masking the roses again each time before stamping.
Once you've finished with the greenery, replace the rose masks ready for the background & use masking tape round the edge to create a border before adding any colour.
Place the sun mask over the verse and the cloud mask as shown.  Brush Tumbled Glass ink over the sun & upper cloud area and gradually move the cloud mask down the artwork to create layers of cloud with your brush.

Once that's done, remove the sun & cloud masks and position the outie around the sun.  Use the blending tool to add colour, first Squeezed Lemonade then go lightly over part of it with Mountain Rose.
Remove the mask and tape and colour in the roses - the new Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens are fab, but colouring pencils or watercolour pencils/paints would look just as good.  Draw a thin line with the Micron pen round the artwork and use the grey Promarker to add shadow to the rose petals to give a 3D effect.
Mount on contrasting backing card then onto the greeting card.
A pretty card - perfect for many occasions with such a lovely sentiment!
I hope you'll be inspired by mine, and the other Clarity Design Team's artwork.  Remember to visit their blogs to have a peek at their masking ideas too - there's some fab artwork to give you lots of ideas.
Come on in and have a go at winning a £50 Claritystamp Voucher.

Challenge 37 - It's all about the Girls!

Hi there and thanks for popping by to see me today.  1st March today and not really a good start to the month here in Uxbridge as it's raining!.....But, set to brighten later, so that's a bit of good news!!
Another bumper month in February for the Clarity Challenge with over 80 entries again, but I have a feeling this one will top that!?  You are certainly making our job a difficult one choosing just five as our favourites!!
Well, "It's all about the Girls"....so come on ladies and gents, using only your Clarity stamps, stencils or Groovi, (use any, a combination, or all if you want to), I'm positive you'll come up with some corkers!
So for my artwork this month, I chose to go with a bright background and an elegant silhouette using one of the lady stencils I have, combined with a couple of stamps.
Here we go with the simple step-by-step:
Take the funky background - mine was made with Brushos, (but Color Bursts are great too), on a piece of 8.5  x 11 inch piece of Stencil Card - just wet the stencil card (or watercolour paper) and gently shake or puff the powders onto the wet surface to watch the magic happen.  I love the bright colours - certainly brightens this dreary day that's for sure!
Next lay your Gelli-plate onto the Mega Mount and brayer some acrylic paint on (I used Paperartsy Beach Hut & Snowflake combined).  Lay the Leafy Swirl Stencil onto the wet paint.  Quickly dab in between the stencil with a piece of copy paper to remove some of the paint.  Remove the stencil and turn the Mega Mount over so that you can control where you place it on your card.  Once in place, turn the whole thing back over and burnish the back well to transfer the acrylic paint onto the card.  You could use the larger leafy stencil with the large Gelli-plate, but I only wanted part of the card with the acrylic paint on and the lady stencil is A5 so she fitted better on half of the A4 sized card - there is kind of a method in my madness!

Place the Flower Head Stencil of your choice over the Leafy Swirl image and first using the Twisted Citron use a make up sponge to lightly ink a subtle design through where there's no acrylic paint.  Then using the darker Archival Ink go over the acrylic paint to complete - Archival Ink is the way to go over acrylic paint as the Distress Inks just wipe off.
Attach the Elegant Lady over the area you have worked on and sponge Black Archival Ink through leaving a lighter area in the centre so that the colours still show through. Make-up sponge or Blending Tool both work equally well.
Next (and when I forgot to take more photos), remove the stencil and dust your work with talc.  Replace the stencil, and stamp the Leafy Swirl across the bottom of her dress using Versamark.  Remove stencil and white emboss it.
Replace stencil and using a Leafy Corner stamp, pattern the handbag. Remove stencil and use Clear Embossing Powder on that - heat to set.  Stamp a flourish on the hat and add some line art with a Black Sharpie for the hair & her face, then a white highlighter pen to finish the handbag, hat and dress.
Stamp your sentiment from the Line Sentiments 1 on a spare piece of the coloured card and carefully cut out - or leave it square if you prefer.  Outline the main piece with a Promarker or other marker of your choice to contrast, mount on a piece of gold card, then onto an A5 blank greeting card.
All finished!

If you need more inspiration, why not pop over to see the other Design Team Blogs.
Have fun designing and crafting your entry for the Challenge, and I look forward to seeing your artwork.
Good Luck x

Love themed Clarity Challenge

Well here we are again for the second posting for this month's "Love" Challenge.....
I hope you like it....

Take the following ingredients:
Clarity Vine Heart Stencil
Copy paper
3 pieces of Clarity 7x7 Stencil card
Cosmic Shimmer Vintage Ink Spray - Evergreen
Perfect Pearls Mists - Interference Red

Lay the stencil onto the copy paper and spritz the two inks onto it - this mix of colours gives a lovely verdigris-effect
Spritz the inked stencil lightly with water then carefully pick it up (try to avoid touching the ink) & turn the stencil over onto a piece of the Stencil card
Next work on outlining and shadowing the heart & vines with a Micron pen and a grey Promarker

Take another piece of stencil card and make the background by spritzing the same green & red onto one piece

I sprayed a little too much ink onto the card, so I laid another piece on top and transferred the excess ink to the second piece - it's always nice to have a choice!
I decided to cut around the heart leaving about 1/4 inch border of white, as I wanted more of the background to show.  The nature coloured Spectrum Noir pencils enhanced the already pretty colours on the heart perfectly.

Once the background card is dry, dust it with talc and using "Love" from the Wordchain set 6, stamp randomly with the Versamark ink and white emboss.

Using a ruler and a contrasting coloured Promarker, edge the stencil card and then draw a thin black line with the Micron pen.
Mount the background card onto an 8x8 blank greeting card, then mount the cut-out heart piece at an angle using double-sided tape.....That's it - finito!!

Here's a few photos to try and show how 3-D it looks - I like this effect.

You've still got time to enter the February Challenge you know - the winner is randomly selected, so everyone's in with a chance of winning the top prize of a £50 Clarity voucher....
You've got to be in it to win it!
Good luck and see you again soon xxx

February Clarity Challenge No. 36 - "Love"

Hi there - February's Clarity Challenge is upon us already!  The "Love" theme should be a great one to air all things love-related from Clarity - there's certainly lots to choose from!
So down to business.....a romantic one for all you lovers (& crafters) out there!

My ingredients are:
Best Ever Craft Mat (Mine is on order as we speak - looked fab on Paul's HOCHANDA show)
Blank 8x8 base greeting card
Clarity Stencil Card x 2 (& any small scrap card for mopping up stray-spray)
Water Spritzer Bottle & low tack masking tape
New Design Club - 7x7 Heart Stencil
New Design Club - Elephant Heart
"Celebrate" from Word Chain 3
Wee Folk 6 Wedding - The wee entwined hearts
Cosmic Shimmer Ink Spray Mist "Clover"
Perfect Pearls Mists "Perfect Copper"
Spectrum Noir "Essentials" colouring pencils
Black Archival Ink & Tim Holtz "Victorian Velvet" & "Mowed Lawn" Distress Inks
Medium Charcoal Pencil
Black Micron Pen, Pink & Grey Promarker, Bronze Uni-Ball Pen
Blending Tool
(See links below to the Clarity website to help you find products available direct from Claritystamp)
I've been trying to use some of my "older" Clarity products rather than using the "on-trend" ones, so I chose a pretty NDC Heart Stencil and attached it with low tack masking tape to spritz my chosen pink & copper colours through it.
I hate wasting ink - when I removed the stencil, there was quite a lot of ink on it, so I lightly spritz it with water and placed it ink-side-down onto a second piece of stencil card - when removed, this gives you the negative image.
There was quite a bit of stray ink on the craft mat too, so rather than just wipe it up, I dabbed a piece of scrap card  onto it.
There you go, a nice background card for a future project - "Waste-not, want-not" as the saying goes!  Next, stamp the NDC Elephant Heart using Black Archival into one of the stencilled hearts....that's the glory of "all-things-Clarity", they're so inter-changeable!
Colour in the headdresses of the elephants with Spectrum Noir pencils and using the copper pen, fill in-between the lines of both elephants, and add a few dots around the headdresses.
Add a charcoal shadow under them by lightly drawing a thin line with the charcoal pencil and blend downwards with your finger - Darken as necessary.

Stamp "Celebrate" in Victorian Velvet ink and outline with the Micron pen.  Then also stamp a few Wee Hearts in pink.  Draw round the stencil heart twice and fill in using a chequered effect with the black pen and add some colour to the leaves using a green colouring pencil.
To finish off, I drew random sketchy lines around the square outline with the black pen, then did the same with the pink Promarker.  Underline  the lower part of the large & small hearts and the word with the grey Promarker for shadow.  Using a ruler and the pink Promarker edge the stencil card with a thin line, then add some twine and a bow to the stencil card.
Using the blending tool, take your base card and lightly add some Meadow Grass green ink around the edge.  Mount the finished artwork on the base card & that's it completed.
So this is my first February inspiration for you.  I hope you have some fab ideas for this month's Challenge, but if you're struggling a little, check out the rest of the Design Team samples.  You can click on the link in the Clarity Challenge Blog to see how to create all the other samples.  For next time I will re-set the links to my Team mates on here again, as they all seem to have disappeared!
The Team will be adding some mid-month examples too, so feel free to re-visit us any time.
Look forward to seeing all your entries.  Although it makes our task more challenging to choose the Top 5 when there are loads of entries, it's wonderful to see all your artwork.  Let's see if you can beat last month's bumper amount of entries....Spread the Clarity Challenge word!
Happy Valentine's Day for the 14th - Have a fun time with your loved ones.
Thanks for visiting me today, and I hope to see you back again soon xxx
